Following our team weekend away in Weymouth it was good to see all 16 squad players fit and available for our second encounter with Rushden and higham.
Generals started the game with a lot more confidence than in recent matches, but Rushden took an early lead following a corner, the ball was cleared out to the edge of the box where it fell invitingly for shot at goal. The well hit shot took a wicked deflection, but somehow Cory still managed to get a hand to the ball, only to then see it agonisingly fall into the net off the post 0-1. Generals kept going and were awarded a penalty for a pull on Jake who was attempting to shoot. Up stepped Ben but his placed shot was blocked by the keeper and the rebound bobbled out of harms way. Within a few minutes Josh was brought down in the box (a clear penalty) but this time the ref amazingly waved play on!! Generals persistence paid off on 20 minutes, following some good play down the left with Jim, Josh and Ryan all involved the ball was eventually played out to Toby on the right, and it was his pass through giving Ryan the chance to smash the ball home 1-1. A few changes were made to give some weary legs a rest, but Generals kept up the pressure for the remainder of the half. Half time 1-1.
Again more changes were made ensuring everyone had a deserved run out. This did not seem to influence Generals too much as they carried on taking the game to Rushden. Notable efforts from Reece and Tom both going close and with the game drawing to a close Titus, Adam, Josh and Jim all had opportunities to secure a win, but with no further goals the game ended a 1-1 draw.
It was pleasing tonight to see the confidence back with Generals and playing some really nice football. Strong performances from Phil and Ryan, with Ryan taking the Player of the Match award, well done.
