The game today saw us play against Desborough who have struggled all season in this division, but all credit to them for keeping going, others have folded!
The main focus today was to see Generals keep a clean sheet, keeping their shape / formation and playing the passing game we all like to see.
Generals started the first half playing up hill and against a stiff breeze, this proved to be more difficult than it looked! Generals were creating plenty of chances but no one could quite finish. In the end it was Desborough who almost opened the scoring, but a brilliant save from Cory kept it out. It wasn't until 23 minutes had passed on the clock, that the deadlock was finally broken, with James crossing into the box for Jim to slot home. The frustration that had started to creep in, was now put to rest with Generals playing more as a team, so within a few minutes it was 2-0. This time Kallum the provider, but Jim had plenty to do. As Jim turned inside the box with the Desborough defence desperately trying to wrestle the ball away, he made himself just enough room and finally slotted into the far corner, to add to his tally. Generals were then awarded a penalty for hand ball, Ben stepped up and struck his shot really well, in fact too well, it flew over the crossbar, over the fence, through a window and landed in someone's Sunday dinner!!!!!
Half time 0-2.
The second half was all one way, with Generals in total domination. Within 3 minutes Josh shot from outside the box, it was a corker, flying into the top corner of the net, 0-3. Jim then deservedly secured his hat trick, following Ben's mazey run out from defence, his pass through to Jim being superby finished by lobbing the keeper from the tightest of angles. Almost immediately Reece made it 5, this was from a pass through by Josh, Reece lifted the ball over the defender ( Gascoignesque - Euro 96 ) from his right foot to his left, before striking on the half volley into the corner of the goal. A lull of 10 minutes was followed by two goals from Tom, the first set up by Toby and the second another superb long shot from outside the box for the seventh of the match. Goals were now coming in quick succession, Jake scoring on 63 minutes from Ben's through ball, then Jake turned provider, setting up Ryan to make it nine. The next two goals were cracking individual efforts, the first from Josh and then Jake (both with their second goals of the day), 0-11. In the final few minutes Ryan added his second after a pass from Tom. Tom did his best to get a hat trick himself, but his shot came off the head of an unfortunate defender into the net for an own goal.
Desborough looked for a consolation goal, and the Generals' parent's felt they deserved one for their efforts, they almost succeeded but for Cory who was determined to keep a clean sheet.
Final score 0-13.
Not a good day for Desborough, but for Generals the opportunity of scoring some goals, getting in practice for the tougher matches in the coming weeks! The main point today was the clean sheet, so the man of the match this week went to Cory, well done, now another next week please?
