With the volcanic ash dictating team selection along with a series of injuries, Generals were forced into playing a new defence!!
This was the last thing Generals needed against a strong Thrapston side, but basic defending and communication would go a long way, unfortunately within 10 minutes the opposite happened, two corners were poorly dealt with, as the Generals' players watched rather than competed, allowing Thrapston to easily score on both occasions. More poor defending allowing a third goal, 3-0. To Generals credit, they never gave up, just carried on and battled hard. On 25 minutes Thrapston added a fourth, a well taken goal. When you have taken a battering and are struggling to get your own game going, you look for reward to spur you on and finally Generals were rewarded on the stroke of half time. Great work from Jim down the right hand side of the box, then after winning the ball back from the Thrapston defender, not for the first time this season, he played a searching ball across to the waiting Josh, who side footed past the keeper with a clinical finish.
Half time 4-1
With a couple of changes and a good talking to, Generals needed to show character in the second half. Generals looked a lot better and played much more as a team, some nice football creating one or two chances, notably long range efforts from Ryan, Josh and Adam, all going very close. Cory once again leading by example making sure Thrapston added no further goals.
Final score 4-1.
A disappointing first half, understandable with all the changes that were forced. Second half much improved, showing that they can compete equally when required. A welcome return from Ryan, Toby the pick of the back four with another excellent game, the back four all tried their best in difficult circumstances. An excellent display from James, in a disjointed midfield, won him a deserved man of the match award, well done.
